The Geremiah Lofton Advocacy Scholarship

On January 22, 2024 Geremiah “Buddy Lee” Lofton departed this earth and joined the rank of ancestors. Geremiah was a graduate of Huston- Tillotson University class of 2018, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, and a member of the NAACP. 

While in college, Geremiah ran cross country and track and field and was named Red River All-Conference in the long jump and triple jump. Geremiah was a W.E.B. DuBois Honors Scholar, a Hatton W. Sumners Scholar, and an HTs 1st rep to HBCU White House Initiative on Advancing Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity under the President Trump administration while at Huston-Tillotson. Geremiah moved to Washington , DC where he completed his masters in Public Administration from George Washington University while interning with Senator Bennie G Thompson of Mississippi. He then served in the following roles, Recruitment & Policy Intern; Dept of State Diplomatic Security Service, Intern; Subcommittee Clerk of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Special Assistant & Brief book Coordinator; Secretary of the Dept of Homeland Security & Policy Advisor, National Security Council for the White House (Biden Harris Administration). 

Geremiah “Buddy Lee” Lofton was a trailblazer who left an indelible mark on his community and the world. As a leader, scholar, and fierce advocate, he set the bar high for success.

Scholarship Details

The Geremiah Lofton Advocacy Scholarship is designed for individuals majoring in Accounting & Finance or those with political aspirations. This scholarship aims to continue Geremiah’s legacy by awarding winning applicants a $1,000 tuition check.

Requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an incoming or current student at Huston-Tillotson University.

  • Major in Accounting & Finance or have a strong interest in pursuing a career in politics.

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit the following:

  1. A resume highlighting their achievements and experiences.

  2. A 500-word essay addressing the following prompts:

    • How do you plan to impact your community through your major or career aspiration?

    • How will receiving this scholarship impact you?

Timeline

  • Application Window: May 4th - July 30th

  • Applicants Notified: August 1st
